Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the government’s decision to allow in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment under Aasandha coverage.
Aasandha is the national health insurance scheme launched by the Maldivian government to facilitate affordable access to health services and medicine by the public.
Speaking at Tuesday’s press conference, December 5, President Muizzu said that the cabinet has decided to amend the relevant rules and regulations to allow IVF treatment to be covered under Aasandha.
He added that the government will develop the fertility center at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), and open a USD 1.9 million fund for reproductive health. Muizzu further noted that the IVF treatment would be covered under Aasandha in private hospitals as well.
Additionally, international hospitals that provide IVF services would be graded under Aasandha.
President Muizzu also affirmed to improve the quality of services provided under Aasandha and facilitate the test for chronic illnesses twice a year through Aasandha on doctors’ recommendation for patients. He assured to prioritize building a healthy society by improving preventive healthcare across the Maldives.
Highlighting the financial burden on the government towards the national health insurance scheme, President Muizzu promised to improve and strengthen the management of Aasandha through a check and balance system.
Maldives government currently spends an average of USD 65 million a year on Aasandha.
